Zagreb and Castles of Hrvatsko zagorje - Info & Enquiry - Back

A three-day excursion for lovers of Baroque castles and Secession architecture, along with visits to museums and walks through parks in the cities of Zagreb and Varazdin.


Day 1 / Zagreb

ZagrebArrival in Zagreb and the hotel. Afternoon walk through the city. Visits to the most beautiful sites of Donji grad (Lower City), including the Botanical Garden, the old University Library, Mimara Museum, Croatian National Theater, University of Zagreb and Zrinjevac Park.

The walk continues to Gornji grad (Upper City), on Sv. Marko Square where Sabor (the Croatian Parliament), Banski dvori (Croatian Government), and Sv. Marko Church are located, followed by Lotrscak Tower, Jezuitski Square and Kamenita vrata (Stone Gate), then through Radiceva Street to Ban J. Jelacic Square and Mandusevac Fountain, and finally a visit to Zagreb Cathedral. Dinner and overnight stay in a hotel in Zagreb. 


Day 2 / Kumrovec - Miljana - Veliki Tabor - Krapina

ZagorjeAfter breakfast, departure for Hrvatsko zagorje. First stop is Kumrovec, an ethno village on the Sutla River and the birthplace of Marshal Tito. Kumrovec is known for its unique open-air museum and well preserved, typical rural houses of Hrvatsko zagorje.

This is followed by sightseeing of Miljana Castle, former summer residence of the Ratkay family, then sightseeing of Veliki Tabor Castle, the best-preserved medieval fortress in Croatia, also owned by the Ratkay family, and lunch in the restaurant.

Visit to the place of Husnjakovo by Krapina, a famous site where the Paleolithic remains of the Krapina proto-human were found, and a visit to the Evolution Museum. Dinner and overnight stay in Varazdin. 


Day 3 / Varazdin - Trakoscan

VarazdinAfter breakfast, sightseeing of the city of Varazdin, including the old town with splendid Baroque buildings (City Hall, Cathedral), and the famous Varazdin Cemetery.

This is followed by lunch in a restaurant and a visit to Trakoscan Castle, former residence of the Draskovic family, nowadays one of Croatia's most beautiful castles and museums with preserved furniture and weapons from the period from the 15th to the 19th century.

Return to Zagreb.
